This is a really fascinating topic. I've always thought of Milton as a champion of Christianity (and I still do in many regards), but I'm discovering that his ideas were often quite dissonant with those of his contemporaries. It's almost like he's trying to create a new breed of Christianity! It's kind of interesting to note as well that he actively sought reform in the church and published various tractates calling for changes within the church in the spheres of administration and discipline.
